First Unitarian Church of Saint Louis

St. Louis, Missouri (2002)

Powers Bowersox Associates prepared an expansion and renovation master plan for the First Unitarian Church of Saint Louis. The master plan unifies the design of the original 1917 stone church and its additions, resolves numerous functional and building systems deficiencies, and positions the congregation for meeting program needs for the next twenty years.

A key element of the plan is a new 100 seat multi-purpose chapel.  The chapel and memorial garden work together.  The chapel shelters the memorial garden from the street and, through the use of a glass wall and a poetic row of 11 glass doors, the garden becomes the fourth side of the chapel.

The project received an AIA St. Louis Honor Award for Architecture and is featured in Michael J. Crosbie’s book Houses of God, Religious Architecture for a New Millennium.
